About Us

3DX Research is a group of undergraduate and graduate students at the Arizona State University, established in the Fall of 2017. Our overarching mission is:

To understand why form in nature is the way we find it, and
leverage that understanding to engineer a better world.

To address this mission, we have developed three related research themes that are the focus of our work in the group:

Our group’s work using laser powder bed fusion for creating wicking structures for heat pipe radiators is featured in the latest Metal AM magazine (page 169). Our PI for this effort, and lead author on the magazine article is Penn State’s Prof. Alex Rattner. At ASU the work was led by Dr. Cameron Noe, now at GE Vernova. We are busy moving into a new lab space in the new ISTB12 building at the Polytechnic campus at ASU! Doors open September! Stay tuned! Podcast: Bio-inspired Design for Additive Manufacturing | Additive Manufacturing Education | Architected Materials The bee’s honeycomb has many intriguing meso-structural design elements beyond just the hexagonal cell - but what are they good for? In this paper published in Integrative & Comparative Biology (SICB and SICB journals), we identify 11 of these meso-structures in 4 categories, review studies in the literature that describe their structural benefits, and speculate on possibilities for bio-inspired design. Entropy and cellular material design? Branched two-tone hair (setae) on the drone of the Apis Mellifera (honeybee). The functions of branching in these hair are still debated.
